Thinking Blocks - Bar Models
Thinking blocks are a great way to make visual representations of word problems in order to understand the problem and determine the mathematics required to solve it. The posters have been made to print at A3 - change the page set up if they are A4. Click the thumbnail to open the download in Google Drive. You do not need to request access.

Penguin Numbers 1 to 100
I am working with a group of children on the 'Spring into Maths' programme, which is based on the work of Marilyn Holmes when she was a Numeracy Co-ordinator based in Dunedin. I needed some cards with 1-100 on them for the children to read and order - here they are.

Unfortunately I can't find a link to the original work but many schools mention them on their websites and could provide the programme itself.

Winter Themed Addition Games
I created some winter clip art and want to use them in a themed set of addition games. Will add to this post as they get finished.
In this game children practise making ten. Click on the image to open the download site.

In this game children practise addition facts where one of the addends is 5, 6, 7, 8 or 9 and the sum is between 10 and 18. Click on the image to open the download link to the 2 page pdf file.
In the following bump game children practise adding 10 to a single digit number. Click on the image to open download link to the 2 page pdf file.

In the following bump game children practise doubles to 20. Click on the image to open download link to the 2 page pdf file.

In the following game children practise addition facts with sums of 5 to 10. Click on the image to open download link to the png file.
Numeracy Card Games
These are two pdf files, each with five card games that practice a range of knowledge to support numeracy learning.

I have been looking for basic facts games that are easy to store and pack away.  Ones that don't have multiple cards that need to be collected and bagged or special dice and spinners that need to be made.   These multiplication games have a Halloween theme using clipart I have created and don't require anything more than the game board and counters for each player.
Daily Maths Number
We are counting down the school days until the 100th day when we will have a celebration day.  For a maths warm up we record the number on this chart and complete the activities.  The second poster is for larger numbers and I use this after the first 100 days.

Martian Fractions Problem 1
Martian Fractions
Saturday saw me at the PMA (Primary Mathematics Association) Seminar Day where I listened to some great speakers including Vince Wright, Peter Hughes and Bobbie Hunter.
Bobby shared the way she introduces fractions using a linear model within the context of martian chocolate bars.  When children have a strong sense of fractions as imaged quantities martian fractions can then be used to introduce children to a set model.  This was something I wanted to use with my children in the following week so I created this martian clipart to introduce the story -
"We all know that Martians are blue (in movies anyway) and they only like to eat blue food.  Martian chocolate is always blue and comes in only one length (one whole).  The chocolate we eat is many colours and comes in different lengths.  We are going to compare martian chocolate bars with ours."

Number Wheels
Number knowledge is an important part of the Numeracy Programme in New Zealand schools.  I made these posters from an original document given to me by Team Solutions - Numeracy Facilitators.  I use them within a whole class warm up or knowledge teaching within a small group.  They can be used in independent learning time by an individual student, with a thinking buddy or a small group.
